Av malmen, som först smältes i masugnar, framställdes i smedjorna hantverksmässigt stångjärn, ett järn av mycket hög kvalité, som var eftertraktat framförallt i England. Stångjärnet blev därför en viktig exportvara och bidrog i hög grad till att förbättra bygdens och landets ekonomi. Runt masugn och smedja byggdes bostadshus och uthus för smeder, masugnsarbetare, tjänstemän och för alla andra som krävdes för produktion och dagligt liv i bruket. Ägaren, brukspatronen, från 1643 alla med efternamnet De Geer, bodde också i bruket i en herrgård omgiven av en stor park, på avstånd från den övriga bebyggelsen, men ändå mitt i bruket. Lövstabruk fick sin nuvarande form efter rysshärjningarna 1719. Det är en stadsliknande miljö med raka gator, fyrsidiga kvarter, prydliga bostadshus, några monumentala byggnader mitt i bruket, en herrgård på andra sidan dammen och en rad stiliga ekonomibyggnader i anslutning till herrgården. Och i den välbevarade kyrkan finns en lika välbevarad orgel, byggd av Johan Niclas Cahman 1728. Det är en välordnad, prydlig och stämningsfull miljö som vittnar om omsorg och omtanke, men också om en uttalad patriarkal struktur. År 1926 markerar slutet på en epok. Då lades verksamheten ned i Lövstabruk. Det hantverksmässigt tillverkade järnet hade kommit att konkurreras ut av industriell stordrift. Smedjorna och verksbyggnader revs och Lövstabruk blev så småningom ett fördrömt vackert litet samhälle som griper tag om besökaren. För att ge en inblick i hur det var när det begav sig, har Föreningen Leufsta & Cahmanorgelns Vänner låtit utarbeta några berättelser, vilka nu delges alla besökare som kommer till Lövstabruk för att uppleva miljön och för att få del av en viktig epok i svensk historia. The ore, once it had been smelted in the blast furnace, was forged by hand into bar iron, a high-quality product in great demand, especially in England. Bar iron was thus an important export that benefitted the economy of both the local area and the country as a whole. Around the blast furnace and forge were homes and outhouses for the industrial workers, office staff and others who were needed to produce iron and maintain daily life at Lövstabruk. The De Geer family, owners of the works since 1643, lived here too, in a manor house surrounded by a large park, divorced from the settlement and yet central to the community. Lövstabruk’s present-day appearance dates from its restoration following the Russian attack of 1719. This is an urban environment of straight streets, rectangular blocks, neat homes, some monumental buildings in the centre and, on the opposite shore of the lake, the manor house and attractive ancillary buildings. And the well-preserved church houses an equally well-preserved organ, built by Johan Niclas Cahman in 1728. This well-ordered, neat and evocative environment reflects care and consideration, and pronounced patriarchal social structure too. The year 1926 marked the end of an era – Lövstabruk ironworks closed. Production by craftsmen had been outcompeted by large-scale industry. The forges and works buildings were demolished, and Lövstabruk eventuall became a sleepy, idyllic little settlement that charms its visitors. To give an impression of Lövstabruk in its heyday, the Association of the Friends of Leufsta and the Cahman Organ have prepared the following narratives. They aim to help visitors appreciate this environment and learn more about an important era in Swedish history. A partir du minerai, qui était d’abord fondu dans les hauts fourneaux, on produisait dans les forges, de façon artisanale, du fer marchand, un fer en barre d’excellente qualité qui était très recherché, principalement en Angleterre. Ce fer devint par conséquent un produit d’exportation important, qui contribua fortement à améliorer l’économie de la région et du pays. Autour des hauts fourneaux et des ateliers de forge se construisirent les maisons d’habitation et les entrepôts destinés aux forgerons, au personnel d’administration, et à tous ceux qui participaient à la production et au fonctionnement quotidien de la forge. Le propriétaire, appelé «maître de forge», dont le patronyme, de génération en génération depuis 1643, était De Geer, habitait lui aussi sur le site, dans un manoir entouré d’un grand parc, à une certaine distance des autres bâtiments, mais au centre du domaine. La forge de Lövsta prit sa configuration actuelle après la grande guerre du Nord et les attaques russes de 1719. Elle est agencée comme un village, avec des rues droites dessinant un parfait quadrillage, de jolies maisons d’habitation, quelques grands édifices au coeur de l’usine, le manoir, de l’autre côté du bassin, et toute une rangée de fiers entrepôts, à proximité du manoir. Et dans la chapelle, si bien conservée, se trouve un orgue tout aussi bien conservé, construit par Johan Niclas Cahman en 1728. Ce décor organisé, pittoresque et ravissant, témoigne du soin et de l’attention portés par les habitants de naguère à leur cadre de vie, mais aussi, d’une société résolument patriarcale. L’année 1926 marque la fin d’une époque. L’activité s’arrête à la forge de Lövsta. Le fer, fabriqué de façon artisanale, est concurrencé par la grande production industrielle. Les ateliers et les fourneaux sont rasés, et Lövsta devient, avec le temps, un idyllique petit village, qui saisit par son charme le visiteur. Pour donner un aperçu de son origine et de sa fonction première, L’Association des Amis de Leufsta et de l’Orgue de Cahman propose cet ensemble de petits récits, à l’intention de tous les visiteurs de la forge qui souhaitent s’imprégner de son atmosphère, et revivre une époque importante de l’histoire de Suède. Selon l’époque dont on parle ou le contexte de ce qui est précisément désigné, on utilise en suédois l’une ou l’autre de ces deux formes, à connotations plus ou moins modernes. C’est Louis De Geer, un négociant venu de Belgique, qui au XVIIème siècle fit de Lövsta la forge la plus importante du pays. Il construisit un véritable empire métallurgique et donna ainsi une place à la Suède sur la carte des nations industrielles. En 1719 cependant, après les rafles russes, l’usine n’était plus pour ainsi dire qu’un tas de cendres. Le patrimoine que nous conservons aujourd’hui nous vient du XVIIIème siècle. Lorsque la forge fut reconstruite, on gratifia la chapelle d’un orgue signé « Johan Niclas Cahman » – véritable signe extérieur de richesse. Avec son mécanisme intact datant de 1728, c’est l’un des instruments d’époque les plus précieux d’Europe du Nord. Mais Lövsta abrite un autre trésor : une bibliothèque, contenant probablement la plus belle collection d’ouvrages du XVIIIème siècle de Suède. Le premier fonds en fut constitué lorsque Charles De Geer, encore adolescent, arriva à Lövsta pour prendre la direction de l’usine avec douze caisses de bois chargées de livres. Jahrhundert angelegt wurden. Hier wurde das Eisenerz bearbeitet, das man Dannemora oder in einer anderen Grube abbaute. Nachdem man es in Hochöfen geschmolzen hatte, wurde handwerksmäßig in Schmieden Stabeisen hergestellt, ein Eisen von sehr hoher Qualität, das vor allem in England sehr begehrt war. Es war ein wichtiges Exportprodukt, das entscheidend dazu beitrug, die Ökonomie der Region und des gesamten Landes zu verbessern. Um Hochofen und Schmieden herum baute man Wohnhäuser und Wirtschaftsgebäude für Schmiede, Hochofenarbeiter, Angestellte und alle anderen Leute, die für die Produktion und das tägliche Leben in Ort und Hütte benötigt wurden. Der Besitzer, der Hüttenpatron – sie alle trugen seit 1643 den Namen De Geer –, wohnte ebenfalls im Ort und zwar in einem Herrenhof, der etwas abseits vom Ort selbst und doch in seiner Mitte lag. Ihn umgab ein großer Park. Lövstabruk erhielt sein jetziges Aussehen 1719 nach der Brandschatzung durch die Russen, eine stadtähnliche Anlage mit geraden Straßen, rechteckigen Häuservierteln, gepflegten Wohnhäusern, einigen großzügig gestalteten Gebäuden mitten im Ort, einem Herrenhof auf der anderen Seite eines Teiches und im Anschluss daran einigen prächtigen Wirtschaftsgebäuden. Und in der guterhaltenen Kirche befindet sich eine ebenso guterhaltene Orgel, 1728 erbaut von Johan Niclas Cahman. Alles in allem ein äußerst gut geordnetes, gepflegtes und stimmungsvolles Milieu, das von Sorgfalt und Umsicht zeugt, aber auch von einer ausgesprochen patriarchalischen Struktur. Das Jahr 1926 markiert das Ende einer Epoche. Die Eisenherstellung in Lövstabruk wurde eingestellt. Handwerk konnte nicht länger mit industrieller Massenproduktion konkurrieren. Die Schmieden und Wirtschaftsgebäude wurden abgerissen, und Lövstabruk entwickelte sich zu einem verträumten, schmucken und kleinen Ort, der bis heute seine Besucher in den Bann schlägt. Um einen Einblick davon zu vermitteln, wie sich Ort und Hütte einst ausnahmen, hat „Föreningen Leufsta & Cahmanorgelns Vänner“, der Vereinigung der Freunde von Leufsta und der Cahmanorgel, einige kleinere Texte in einer Broschüre zusammengestellt. Sie steht allen Besuchern zur Verfügung, die nach Lövstabruk kommen, um das Milieu zu erleben und somit an einer wichtigen Epoche der schwedischen Geschichte teilzuhaben. A partir du minerai, qui était d’abord fondu dans les hauts fourneaux, on produisait dans les forges, de façon artisanale, du fer marchand, un fer en barre d’excellente qualité qui était très recherché, principalement en Angleterre. Ce fer devint par conséquent un produit d’exportation important, qui contribua fortement à améliorer l’économie de la région et du pays. Autour des hauts fourneaux et des ateliers de forge se construisirent les maisons d’habitation et les entrepôts destinés aux forgerons, au personnel d’administration, et à tous ceux qui participaient à la production et au fonctionnement quotidien de la forge. Le propriétaire, appelé «maître de forge», dont le patronyme, de génération en génération depuis 1643, était De Geer, habitait lui aussi sur le site, dans un manoir entouré d’un grand parc, à une certaine distance des autres bâtiments, mais au centre du domaine. La forge de Lövsta prit sa configuration actuelle après la grande guerre du Nord et les attaques russes de 1719. Elle est agencée comme un village, avec des rues droites dessinant un parfait quadrillage, de jolies maisons d’habitation, quelques grands édifices au coeur de l’usine, le manoir, de l’autre côté du bassin, et toute une rangée de fiers entrepôts, à proximité du manoir. Et dans la chapelle, si bien conservée, se trouve un orgue tout aussi bien conservé, construit par Johan Niclas Cahman en 1728. Ce décor organisé, pittoresque et ravissant, témoigne du soin et de l’attention portés par les habitants de naguère à leur cadre de vie, mais aussi, d’une société résolument patriarcale. L’année 1926 marque la fin d’une époque. L’activité s’arrête à la forge de Lövsta. Le fer, fabriqué de façon artisanale, est concurrencé par la grande production industrielle. Les ateliers et les fourneaux sont rasés, et Lövsta devient, avec le temps, un idyllique petit village, qui saisit par son charme le visiteur. Pour donner un aperçu de son origine et de sa fonction première, L’Association des Amis de Leufsta et de l’Orgue de Cahman propose cet ensemble de petits récits, à l’intention de tous les visiteurs de la forge qui souhaitent s’imprégner de son atmosphère, et revivre une époque importante de l’histoire de Suède. In the 17th century, Louis De Geer, a Belgian financier, turned Lövstabruk into the largest ironworks in the country. He built an entire empire around ironworking, which helped to place Sweden on the map as an industrial nation. Following the Russian incursion of 1719, most of the settlement lay in ashes. The heritage that we safeguard today dates from the 18th century. When Lövstabruk was rebuilt, the church was provided with an organ by Johan Niclas Cahman – a real status symbol. The organ, which retains its original mechanism from 1728, is one of the most important instruments in Northern Europe. The area’s heritage also includes another treasure: the library with perhaps the country’s foremost 18th-century collection of books. Its nucleus was the twelve crates of books that accompanied the teenage Charles De Geer to Lövstabruk when he became lord of the manor. Today the collection is cared for by Uppsala University Library. Each year the Association organises two events: a concert to coincide with our annual meeting in May; and the Cahman Days, which take place one weekend in August. The Cahman Days focus on the famous organ. At least one day features recitals by prominent Swedish and international organists. On day two, ensembles play repertoires befitting the golden age of Lövstabruk. In addition to concerts, the Association sometimes arranges exhibitions at Lövstabruk.
